About Sonam Lama Architects

About Us

At Sonam Lama Architects (SLA), we believe that every project—whether a building, a non-building intervention, or an artistic expression—holds the potential to shape our urban environments. While urban planning is often confined to theoretical exercises and policy frameworks, SLA seeks to bridge the gap between visionary research and tangible architectural outcomes.

Our practice begins at the scale of the individual project, but never ends there. Each architectural gesture is understood in its broader urban context—its social, environmental, and spatial implications. From built forms to audio-visual narratives, SLA engages in diverse project typologies to contribute meaningfully to how cities are experienced, expanded, and lived.

Central to our approach is collaboration. We see the relationship between architect/urban planner and client as more than transactional—it’s a mutual learning process. Through thoughtful dialogue and deep engagement with client aspirations, we create opportunities to co-educate and collectively build better futures.

At SLA, architecture is not just about solving problems—it’s about asking the right questions and pushing boundaries, all while staying grounded in the real-world impact of design.

About Us

WALK

I am an avid trekker and hiker. Being born and raised in Tsum, high Himalayan region above 3000meter, every day walk to school, walking several days down to Gorkha, Kathmandu, I love walking. Walking also provides me much needed physical rigor, mental freshness.

About Us

TALK

The first time I gave a talk was during an essay competition organized by the World Food Programme in school, where I faced sheer stress, nervousness, and panic while speaking to 100 people. That experience taught me a valuable lesson: "Preparation is half the victory." With proper preparation, I realized there’s nothing I cannot achieve. Since then, I’ve embraced every opportunity to speak, whether it’s guest lectures or talks, seeing them as chances to share ideas and hone my presentation skills. I now enjoy giving talks on topics like earthquake-resilient features in traditional high-Himalayan architecture, cultural heritage such as "mani walls," and the impact of motor roads in remote regions.

Bir Man Shrestha

Biru is an experienced builder with over 15 years of experience in constructing large buildings, such as the Kopan Monastery and several residential structures. He is passionate about construction, specializing in brickwork and reinforced cement concrete. He brings everyday site challenges into architectural design, enhancing the planning details and bridging the gap between the two. Biru is calm, consistent, and caring on the construction site, which is key to successfully completing complex projects. Biru and I met at a tea shop on Kopan Hill where I used to go for a kora. After I shared with him my plans to build a house, he kept following up until I realized that someone as trustworthy as Biru was not only there to help me build my house but also to collaborate on many other projects.

Shanta Raj Tuladhar

Shanta is a master carpenter from the town of Bungamti. His carpentry work follows a tradition passed down from his father and many generations before him. His detailed carvings are the result of his commitment to preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. I first met Shanta in Bungamti, a town known for its beautiful wood carvings, when he, along with his father and co-workers, carved my windows and doors. He was working under a tin shelter, very hot in summer and cold in winter and noisy during monsoon rainfall. I told him, "Shanta, you are producing masterpieces. I dream of you working in a better environment." Four years later, he contacted me to design a heritage home, a four storey building with his workshop in the ground, a show room in the first and guest rooms on the second and third with a restaurant on the top floor. Bungamti Heritage Home is one of the best examples of traditional architecture in the Kathmandu Valley that I am proud to be an architect.
